Unrelenting Standards

I took a test a while back:  Among other things, here is the number one characteristic of my personality that I would need to watch out for.

Unrelenting Standards / Hypercriticalness
The underlying belief that one must strive to meet very high internalized standards of behavior and performance, usually to avoid criticism.  Typically results in feelings of pressure or difficulty slowing down; and in hyper-criticalness toward oneself and others.  Must involve significant impairment in: pleasure, relaxation, health, self-esteem, sense of accomplishment, or satisfying relationships.

Unrelenting standards typically present as: (a) perfectionism, inordinate attention to detail, or an underestimate of how good one’s own performance is relative to the norm; (b) rigid rules and “should’s” in many areas of life, including unrealistically high moral, ethical, cultural, or religious precepts; or (c) preoccupation with time and efficiency, so that more can be accomplished.

I don’t recognize it quite as often as I should; however, Devin assures me that the prognosis is right on the money.  Do a little digging and you might be surprised what you find out about yourself.  You can’t regulate and fix something that you don’t realize is broken.

Don’t Miss Sunday

Happy Thanksgiving Weekend!

If you and your family are in town for the Thanksgiving Holiday – you don’t want to miss Sunday.

Don’t forget – only one Worship Experience at 11:00 this week.

Show up at 9:30 and you will become an honorary partner with the set-up crew.  See you Sunday!

MidWeek Review

  • Happy Thanksgiving week!
  • Super grateful for the life that God has called me to live.  Love my family, friends, the team of people around me, and the incredible people at Freedom Church!
  • It was a holiday weekend in the pouring rain and Sunday was still solid.
  • The partners at Freedom Church do an incredible job of raising the bar. So proud of them!
  • Generosity always comes in the context of gratitude!  Grateful people are generous.  Generous people are grateful.  Very few exceptions.
  • I have a new nephew.  Welcome Jonah to the world.  Congrats to Mark and Heather.
  • I absolutely love being the Pastor of Freedom Church!  Thank you for taking this journey with us and know that I am ecstatic about the very near future!
  • I hope you have an incredible Thanksgiving!  Enjoy your time with family and I will see you Sunday!

Gratitude

Gratitude shouldn’t be relegated to a particular season; nonetheless, it does get showcased this time of year more than any other.  This is a very good thing because gratitude does a couple things for me…

  • It keeps things in perspective
  • It’s a breeding ground for generosity (generosity is always cultivated in the context of gratitude).

What are you grateful for during this particular season of life? Take a second and write that out – one by one.  I bet that when you finish – your list might be much longer than you think.

That’s the question

Here’s a question that I have been asking lately.  I’ll ask the same to you.

Can I be trusted with the blessings of God?

  • Am I a generous giver with the money I currently possess?  If not, why should God entrust me with more? (Note:  If you are not generous when you have less – you will NOT be generous when you have more).
  • Am I honoring God with the responsibility He has already given?  If not, why should I pray for more?
  • Do I express gratitude for where I am now?  What makes me think I would express gratitude then?
  • Am I following after the heart of God now?  Will I really follow after the heart of God then?

“God is preparing you for what He has prepared for you.”  My prayer right now is that you and I follow God in THIS season of our lives.  If not, it’s irresponsible to think we will follow Him in the next.
